- Many Ohio Cities Fail to Report Domestic Violence Arrests (2018-2023)
Springfield, Ohio – May 2, 2024 – A new report by the Springfield Domestic Violence Coalition (SDVC) sheds light on a critical public safety issue. The study found a lack of reporting of domestic violence arrests across Ohio. The study, analyzing data from the State of Ohio, Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations on Domestic Violence, found that a troubling 56% of the 25 studied cities, representing 27.1% of the state's population (3,192,532 residents), reported only some or failed to report any domestic violence arrests to the State of Ohio, Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigations (OBCI) between 2018 and 2023.

SDVC MAY 2024 SPECIAL REPORT (PDF) ATTACHED Springfield Domestic Violence Coalition (SDVC) examined Domestic Violence incidents and charges from the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation Domestic Violence Annual Reports between January 1, 2018, and December 31, 2023. The study examined the most populated cities and counties in Ohio. The Special Report found a combined 22 53.6% of County Sheriff's Offices and City Police Departments responding to Domestic Violence incidents have arrest rates of 90 to 100%. Clermont County has a 100% arrest rate when responding to Domestic Violence Incidents when considering other charges from 2018 to 2023. The study examined 21-County Sheriff's Offices and 21-Police Departments and found that 68%, 14-County Sheriff Departments and 14-City Police Departments (Total of 28) that reported Domestic Violence incidents either "Failed to Submit" or submitted "some but not all" reports from 2018 to 2023 to OBCI. Of the 42 Law Enforcement agencies studied, Eight (8) 19.5% failed to submit ANY monthly report. Lastly, the study found that Ten (10) 24.3% of Law Enforcement agencies had an 85% or under submission rate to OBCI from 2018 to 2023 when reporting Domestic Violence Incidents.
